It searches and locates the problems and errors; then uses a permission based approach in which the program asks your permission to fix any registry problems it encounters in its search.
Like many other registry cleaners RegSweep makes a backup of your system in case you run into any problems, so it's pretty much risk free. I found it one of the easiest programs to use in fixing major registry problems.
